Remember when you had your first newborn and anytime you went somewhere people were knocking each other over to greet you…..r baby. That was one of my weird highlights of being pregnant, random people in the grocery store, at the library, etc. would talk so excitedly for me and my future child. It was a nice feeling being cheered on by people who didn’t even know me! Babies seem to have a way of melting even the hardest of hearts!
In honor of the holiday coming up, today’s Valentine’s Day activity is all about hugs and melting hearts. Join in as we melt baking soda hearts and make love bug Valentines. Thank you to my amazing niece and nephew for joining in our fun! 🥰 Now let’s get started!
Love Bugs: A Pop-up Book by David A. Carter
If you want a fun holiday pop-up book, Love Bugs is a great choice. The book itself looks like a giant Valentine and each page has an intricate pop-up picture to go with the story. It’s a simple, but an enjoyable book that leads into our love bug valentine’s perfectly!
Make Your Own Love Bug Valentine
Is your family team buy your valentine’s or team make them? For us, it always seems easier to buy for classes but also make personal ones for the Grandmas. 🙂
This year I decided to try something cute and personal. Hence the love bug valentine: simple, easy, and adorable just the way I like it! Feel free to use our template to make your own love bug valentine’s.
Who Wants A Hug? By Jeff Mack
Everybody loves getting a hug from Bear, everyone that is but Skunk. Determined to stop Bear from giving out hugs, Skunk devises one messy plan after another until he finds out that sometimes all you need is a hug.
A hilarious story about how a loveable bear melts the heart of the stinky-est creature in the forest.
Homemade Baking Soda Melting Hearts
Baking soda experiments are so fun and can keep kids entertained for hours! We thought this was a perfect Valentine’s Day activity with supplies that you probably have in your pantry already.
Materials Needed:
• A Mold
• 1/4 Cup Baking Soda
• 1 to 1.5 TBS of Water
• Vinegar
• Food Dye *optional
• Toys *optional
1. Mix together baking soda, food dye, and the 1st tablespoon of water. You want a paste type dough that starts to hold together. Decide if you need anymore water. (You probably won’t. )
2. Press the paste like dough into your mold. At this point, you will be able to tell if you added to much water. Don’t panic if you did!! Just use a paper towel to blot it, wait a minute or 2 and blot again. You should be good at that point.
3. Freeze for a few hours. Once it seems solid, pop them out of the mold and place in a cookie sheet. Use vinegar to make the hearts “melt”. We dripped the vinegar with a syringe onto the hearts for a while then decided to pour it directly on it.
This activity kept the kids entertained for almost an hour! They enjoyed digging out their simple toys, but were happy playing with the ones without toys as well.
How did this Valentine’s Day activity go for you and yours? Let us know in the comments!
