Food is big in my family and always has been. Each year for our birthdays, the birthday kid gets to choose dinner, ice cream, and kind of cake for their party.
We’ve had everything from a Thanksgiving dinner in April to an every different kind of potato you could think of party. Birthday party food is usually very unique in our family. However, every year since I was a little girl, my birthday has always featured one thing…tacos.
It’s a staple in the menu of many households, popular enough to have a day of the week named after it, and a favorite of the fearsome creature, dragons! Who doesn’t love tacos?!
One day on Pinterest, I came across a dragon airplane craft (more on that later) I knew we had to make. But we of course needed a book to go with it, so I started researching and came across the perfect book for us, “Dragons Love Tacos!”
Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin
Getting ready to plan a party for your dragon friends? Then there is only one thing you need to prepare, lots and lots of tacos! However, the book warns that although dragons love tacos, they can NOT handle spicy salsa.
I read this book to my storytime kids and then we made paper tacos for them to take home. They loved the story and when we were finished, one of the little boys came and told me, “I put extra spicy salsa in the taco for my dragon!”
Join in the fun of this book as you see what happens when these poor dragons eat some salsa flavored with none other than jalapeños!
Dragon Airplanes
Back to our dragon airplanes…here is the link for a color your own dragon airplane by Create in the Chaos. They also offer a colored version that you can buy.
We had a lot of fun with ours and tried 3 different kinds of papers: regular, cardstock, & photo (that was an accident, but we rolled with it anyways.) The cardstock definitely worked the best for us.
Taco Tuesday
A poor mini taco just dreads Taco Tuesday. This week he tries to convince the reader that they would probably enjoy mac and cheese or pizza instead of tacos.
This fun little board book has lots of colors but is not too crazy that it’s overwhelming. It also features a mini taco puppet that goes with you from page to page. Lady is fascinated by the wiggling taco!
Mini Tacos for Dinner
What kind of Taco Tuesday would it be if we didn’t have mini tacos for dinner?! We whipped up our favorite taco recipe and I made little taco shells because mini food always tastes better!
Ingredients:
- Taco Meat (Your favorite works great. We use the recipe on the back of the McCormick seasoning because I love it 🤷🏻♀️)
- Cheese
- Lettuce
- Refried Beans
- Salsa
- Your Favorite Toppings
- Tortillas
Directions:
1. Make your taco meat and while it’s simmering, get started on the mini taco shells.
2. Grab a taco shell and a circle cookie cutter. (We used my crumpet mold but really anything circular will work.) Cut out your circles, depending on the size of your cutter you may be able to get 4 circles.
3. Take your circles and fold them in half. Flip over your muffin tin and place the tortilla circles in the space between your muffin tins.
4. Broil on high for a couple of minutes. Make sure to keep an eye on them as it doesn’t take long to burn!
5. Take the shells out of the oven and fill them with your taco meat and toppings. Enjoy!
