A few years back, someone in my family came across the baby shower trend to bring your favorite baby approved books instead of cards. Thinking that sounded pretty cool, we jumped on the bandwagon and now it’s a staple at any baby shower one of us hosts.

(Like that idea? Here’s the wording we use on our invites.

“Momma & Baby have a special request, instead of a card, bring the book you love best! Let’s fill our baby’s shelves with both classics and new, please pick out a book to remind them of you!”

There are tons of variations out there so do a quick google or Pinterest search and choose one that fits you!)

When my baby shower for Lady came around, I was excited to see what books everyone came up with! We ended up with tons of new baby books and loved hearing the personal stories that came with the books.

• “My son had me read this book every night for months!”

• “This was my favorite book to read to you as a kid!”

And tons more! Now as I read a book to Lady, I can tell her the personal stories that go with each book.

Now let’s get to the reason you came to this blog, my top 5 baby books. These are the “will probably be eaten” books that your infant just loves to stare at!

Eric Carle’s Very Hungry Caterpillar: Fun Foods

This book is part of the Hungry Caterpillar universe of which there are many from which to choose.  It has different textures for your baby to feel and even has the crinkly sounding pages which we love! There are lots of different colors but it’s not crazy busy that your baby won’t like to look at it. There’s also a mirror so your baby can look and learn about facial features and a star and circle that hangs down so they have something to grab onto.  Overall, a very fun book that can capture and keep the attention of your little one.

My First Photo Book

I remember my youngest sister, then my niece, and now Lady having their own family photo book. There are lots of different versions out there, but we have this little rabbit version. There are 17 pages to be filled with 4×6 photos and the very last page features a mirror so your baby can see themselves as well! Babies love faces and with an attached hook, this book can go everywhere with you.

Taco Tuesday

What day of the week does every taco dread? Tuesday! Join in the fun as a little taco tries to convince the reader that they would probably enjoy having something else for dinner. Cute, with just a few words, and features a little taco finger puppet to add to the fun!

Eric Carle and Friend’s What’s Your Favorite Bug

Right away, Lady was drawn (ha punny 😊) to the illustrations in this book.  Each page is done by a different artist as they tell with words and pictures what their favorite bug is. With so many different drawing abilities, each page is an adventure.  A really fine collaboration and will be a great asset when Lady starts playing with bugs. (I believe there are a few Eric Carle collaboration books like this. Since this is the only one that we have read…so far, let us know if you have a favorite that we should check out!)

Marcus Pfister’s The Rainbow Fish

Once again there are many different book versions and stories in the Rainbow Fish universe, but the one we’re talking about is the bathtub version. About the size of a board book, this book is squishy, floats, and is a fun addition to bath time. Goes perfectly with our sea creature bath toys and growing up I always liked the sparkly scales. Although in the bathtub version, the sparkly scales don’t stand out like they do in the regular version.

It’s never too soon to teach your child a love of books! What books kept your baby’s attention and became a diaper bag staple? Let us know your favorite baby books in the comments so we can check them out!
